About Toto

Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and their tour helped them become a household name all over the world.

After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is different from the ballads of previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.

In the course of recording the fifth album the group loses their manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
